Letters and commentaries - Big Bear Private Home Issues Home

Dear Mr. Hansberger,

I would like echo Bob Pool’s comments (below) and add my own concerns.  Whereas Bob lives in the City of Big Bear Lake and one of his lodges comes under that governing body, my neighbors and I live outside the city -- in the County -- and we would be directly impacted by the proposed county ordinance.  We live in the North Shore East community on the north side of Stanfield March and my neighbors and I chose this beautiful area to live in because of the quiet and serene nature of this small community.  Most of the 24 residences here on Bear Loop are occupied by retired (or nearly retired) folks like my wife and me and until recently it has been quiet and peaceful.

This all changed earlier this summer when three new homes were put up for transient rentals with one of the large resort rental agencies here in Big Bear.  Now, we are in a battle with the rental agency that represents these three homes in our formerly peaceful and quiet community.  Residents have had to call the rental agency on numerous occasions and even had the Sheriff send a deputy to quiet down the wild parties and noxious antics.  Complaints include late-night, loud music and noise, drunkenness, public nudity, threats of violence (for asking them to be quiet at 12:00 AM) and blocking traffic by parking so many vehicles and boat trailers on our narrow street.   Thirty of us residents signed and delivered a petition with a letter to the agency, promising to “help” them by calling them any time of the night and by filing complaints with the Sheriff whenever these problems recur.   We have also informed them that we intend to file single or class action in Small Claims Court for deprivation of rights and property if necessary.  When enough of us call to complain, we have gotten action; but, we don’t like the idea that we have to police these transients for the agency.

Yesterday, when a tour bus drove up and off-loaded about 50+ young people into one of the homes, we immediately called the agency.  They came out and arranged to move “nine excess guests” to another location.  We were pretty sure the people were not telling the truth last night when they took only 9 people out to a different cabin in Big Bear City because we had seen, and one neighbor actually counted almost 60 going into the house from the bus.  This morning, about 35 people left the house at one time and walked out to North Shore Drive and away for the day.  This was reported to the rental agency by 3 of us and they responded by asking us to call again if they returned into the house.  Late this afternoon, they started returning in car loads, two cars at a time.  When the neighbor across the street counted 35+ entering the house, she called the agency and they came right out.  We told the rental agency representatives that if they found more than limit of16 occupants in the house we expected them to evict the renters immediately for violating the rental agreement, after being warned last night.  They agreed, and went in.  After much discussion, all occupants were evicted and locked out and have now departed the neighborhood via passenger cars, taxi and on foot.

HELP!!!  We want our quiet and peaceful community back.

PLEASE TRY TO GET THIS ORDINANCE AMENDED TO PROVIDE STRICT REGULATIONS WITH STRONG ENFORCEMENT SIMILAR TO THE BALLOT MEASURE THAT IS BEING PROPOSED FOR THE CITY OF BIG BEAR LAKE http://www.bigbearprivatehomes.com/

Thank you,
